Garden For Brice is a public garden and peaceful retreat, designed and established in memory of celebrated artist Brice Marden (1938–2023).
The project is transforming a derelict riverfront commercial property into a verdant and vibrant cultural and community destination.
Following the demolition of the Dionysus restaurant, a new concession building is now being constructed at at elevation safely above projected flood levels.
The former restaurant’s asphalt and concrete parking lot was removed and is being replaced with an undulating landscape intended to manage both stormwater and tidal river surges through the site while supporting many new native trees and other dynamic plantings.
The river’s edge, formerly a tangle of broken concrete, debris, and invasive species, has been replaced with a sinuous revetment of stone which will stabilize the bank while also enhancing access to the river for garden visitors.
The project’s drainage and stabilization plans to manage stormwater and tidal surges have been hailed by New York State’s DEC/DOS as an improved and innovative model for riverside development.
This acre-large riverfront landscape will provide free, year-round public access for residents and visitors to experience the beauty of the Hudson River.
The garden will feature a wide range of native and regionally suitable trees, shrubs, and herbaceous perennial plants gathered into intentionally naturalistic settings. Beyond its evolving seasonal displays, this landscape will provide a range of ecological services for the community including improving air and water quality, managing tidal surges, and providing resources to a host of bird and pollinator species.
A 2,075 square-foot cafe and bar with counter service will provide a sheltered space for visitors to gather along the riverside and enjoy concessions.
The menu will include hot dogs, seasonal salads, and ice cream using quality, locally-sourced ingredients at an affordable price.
Year-round service will be offered with an outdoor patio for warm weather dining and an indoor fireplace for colder weather.
Project Goals:
Shoreline Restoration: Repairs to the shoreline—now complete—are encouraging the return of natural vegetation and strengthening the site’s ecological resilience. NYS DEC/DOS intend to use this project as a model for responsible riverside development.
Sustainable Water Management: Removal of the former asphalt parking lot and redesign of the landscape now allows stormwater and tidal surges to be managed naturally, reducing runoff and supporting the riverfront ecosystem.
Environmental Cleanup: Since purchasing the property in 2022, the foundation has completed building demolition, environmental cleanup, and removal of impervious surfaces. Recycled concrete from the demolition was donated to the Athens Highway Department for re-use as road material.
Community Engagement: A prime objective of the project is to create a place where residents of Athens and visitors can come together to enjoy the beauty of the Hudson River.
